Aladdin fans have been eagerly awaiting the trailer for the live-action remake of the Disney classic, but after it was released on Sunday fans expressed their disappointment over Will Smith’s appearance as the genie – again.
Smith had to reassure fans last year that his genie would be blue, after photos released from the set of the Guy Ritchie-directed film showed him without any special effects.
And the latest teaser released for the movie left fans equally miffed. The new trailer debuted during the Grammys on Sunday night, where stars including Cardi B, Dua Lipa and Drake were in attendance to collect the prestigious music awards.
‘Poorly animated blue genie’
The minute-long trailer has already gained one million views on YouTube. In it fans see Mena Massoud as Aladdin with his trusty monkey perched on his shoulder, with Naomi Scott seen as Princess Jasmine. But many fans were quick to criticise Smith’s genie, claiming that not enough money or effort has been put into his character.
Fans took to Twitter to vent their frustration with the CGI, while others felt like the genie looked too scary compared to the animated version of Disney’s loveable wish-granting Jinn.
“Will Smith’s Genie is scary,” one person said on Twitter.

Disney has more money than God. Why can't #Aladdin2019 have a CGI genie that doesn't make my skin crawl? I know the CGI in these live-action remakes is usually pretty mediocre, but that Will Smith genie… ugh… #Aladdintrailer pic.twitter.com/lMIcTrhi8C

Where can I watch the trailer?
In the original 1992 Aladdin film Scott Weinger voiced Aladdin, Robin Williams voiced Genie and Linda Larkin voiced Jasmine. During its box office opening, it grossed $504.1 million.
The criticism follows December’s backlash when fans were disappointed again with how the American actor looked posing as the genie for Entertainment Weekly.
Fans were upset when the first images from the new Disney remake were shared and Smith appeared distinctly not blue or CGI.
While Massoud and Scott appear in outfits fairly similar to those in the original animation, people were not happy with Smith’s costume, which showed him in an elaborate blue outfit, jewellery, and sporting a beard and a ponytail.
However, Smith assured fans that he will be blue in the upcoming live-action remake of the film.
Sharing the pictures on his Instagram account, Smith said: “BAM!! First look at the Genie, Princess Jasmine and Aladdin! Check me rocking’ the top know ponytail vibes in @entertainmentweekly (and yes, I’m gonna be BLUE!
“This is how the Genie is in human/disguise form. My character will be CGI most of the movie.”
When is the film out?
Aladdin is set to be released in the United States on May 24, 2019, however, a date hasn’t been confirmed for UK fans just yet.
