Whoa. It's no surprise that New York Giants' Pat Shurmur is already fielding questions about starting a different QB, but this quote from the first-year head coach is a bit of a head scratcher.
Pat Shurmur didn't just leave the door open to possibly playing Alex Tanney at some point this season, but said that he could START him if he believes Tanney gives the #Giants a better chance to win than Eli Manning or Kyle Lauletta do. #NFLhttps://t.co/GPHRYvk4tZ— Matt Lombardo (@MattLombardoNFL) November 26, 2018
While the "best chance to win" quote is undoubtedly a token answer it still is quite troubling in the grand scheme of things. Why wouldn't you want to see how your promising rookie performs as a starter?
It's clear that Alex Tanney is well past his prime, and in a season that is more than likely going to come short of a NFL playoff birth the priority should be planning for the future. Tanney very much so represents the past.
.@Saquon makes this look way too easy.

With Saquon Barkley in the backfield and Odell Beckham at wide receiver the future is extremely bright for the Giants. This makes the decision for starting QB easier on Shurmur, as we have seen so far that even an aging Eli Manning can make things happen on an inconsistent basis.
Taking valuable game experience away from Kyle Lauletta is not only a mistake but a seriously concerning decision. Maybe Shurmur will have an even shorter stay in NY than his predecessor, Ben MacAdoo.
