Actress Rosanna Arquette is still facing the consequences of speaking out against Harvey Weinstein as the 2017 scandal has left her without a talent agent.
The Pulp Fiction star was one of the first high-profile women to accuse the disgraced producer of sexual misconduct as exposes about his allegedly predatory behaviour began hitting headlines over a year ago, when fellow actresses like Rose McGowan, Ashley Judd, Mira Sorvino, and Asia Argento all came forward with stories of uncomfortable encounters with Weinstein.
The controversy led to the rise of the #MeToo and Time’s Up movements against inappropriate behaviour and inequality in Hollywood, as stars across the industry pledged to make positive progress for women and minorities, but Arquette insists little has really changed for her, as she still cannot find an agent to represent her.
“I don’t have an agent, so… I think there’s backlash (from her Weinstein comments) for sure,” she tells Variety.
Rosanna maintains Weinstein derailed her career by bad-mouthing her to producers and directors after she refused his advances following an incident in his hotel room in the 1990s, and she is convinced her continued industry struggles are all to do with studio officials who reportedly failed to call out the filmmaker’s alleged bad behaviour, as those bigwigs are still in positions of power.
Since the scandal erupted in October, 2017, Weinstein has been slapped with sexual assault charges in New York, and is under investigation in Los Angeles and London, but Arquette believes he’s still up to no good.
“I haven’t heard from him, but he’s made sure that me and other women (accusers) have been spied on,” she claims, echoing similar statements previously made by McGowan, who accused Weinstein of rape.
And Arquette wouldn’t be surprised if the producer managed to mount a successful comeback, despite his rapid downfall: “I’m sure if people thought they could make money with him and do something, the people that support him would do that,” she muses. “I think there are a lot of people that don’t want this to be true, and he desperately is trying to come back. I heard he’s trying to work in Europe, in France and Italy, and who knows.”
For the 59 year old, there is only one place she believes Weinstein belongs.
“I think the man deserves to be in jail,” she adds. “Many lives were shattered by his actions and his abuse of power. So I hope that there’s justice in that area.”
Arquette made her comments during an appearance at the Sundance Film Festival in Utah, where the documentary Untouchable, which chronicles the Weinstein controversy and features an interview with the actress, debuted on Friday (25Jan19).
Weinstein has denied all allegations on non-consensual sex, and has pleaded not guilty to felony counts of sexual assault in the New York case. He is set to stand trial in May (19).
